Adventure Tuesday

Adventure Tuesday is a weekly activity on the SLC ropes course for Teenside campers. Boulder Hill, Timberline, Sherwood, Merrylane and Work Program each get a turn participating in a series of challenges in order to earn points. At the end of the session, the Adventure team tallies up the points to declare the winning unit.

The units are split into three groups. Each of the groups begins at one of the stations. The challenges include the Climbing Tower, Jacob’s Ladder, and the Water Trampoline on the lake. At the Climbing Tower, campers are challenged with climbing to the top with a water balloon. Once they get to the top, they have to drop the water balloon to their group members at the bottom, catching it with a blanket to make sure it doesn’t pop. If it pops, they don’t receive points. At Jacob’s Ladder, campers climb with a buddy to the top, harnessed in and working as a team to climb higher. For each step they climb, they earn more points. This challenge is particularly helpful in furthering communication skills. The ladder becomes more difficult to climb, if you and your partner are going at a  different pace. On the Water Trampoline, campers work as an entire group. They swim out to the trampoline, one at a time. While bouncing, they are working to untie an “impossible knot” in 30-second increments. Campers only receive points if they untie the knot completely.

Adventure Tuesday benefits campers in many ways. They improve their teamwork abilities while actively communicating to complete a goal. Opportunities to work on these skills don’t happen often, but Camp brings out the friendly competition in all of us. During the Session One series of Adventure Tuesday, Merrylane came out victorious. We’ll see who takes the crown during Session Two!
