If a simple Bar or Bat Mitzvah that emphasizes spirit and meaning appeals to you, consider the SLC alternative. Each summer, an average of twenty people have their Bar or Bat Mitzvahs at our camp. The ceremonies take place surrounded by nature, in front of the entire camp congregation, and with family members present. They require no formal religious training, are tailored to the individual, and are very moving and poignant. And, they are completely free to SLC campers, including the party afterwards.
In 2004, the NY Times published an article about this fantastic program! You can read it here now.
The Bar & Bat Mitzvah program is supervised by our Camp Rabbi and is supported by our Teen Jewish Program Specialist and Jewish Leadership Staff. It gives young people an opportunity to develop their own material for a ceremony that is unique to them. Being well versed in Hebrew is also not a requirement as our staff will meet with the campers from day one to prepare them for their big day. The specialists will gauge the campers' level of Hebrew and prepare them for whatever they are comfortable and capable of doing.
On the big day, the family can sit back, relax and enjoy camp's natural beauty, without any of the worries or hassles of a large at home service or party. Our program is geared towards teens with a serious interest in becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, but it does not interfere with their full participation in other aspects of camp. There's nothing like proclaiming your love for Judaism and becoming a Bar or Bat Mitzvah surrounded by the rich beauty and tradition of Surprise Lake Camp.
