SUMMARY:Super Bowl Squares Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT – No more this year but come back in 2021  \nSupport camper scholarships at Surprise Lake Camp! In this annual SLC Alumni Association fundraiser\, 50% of the proceeds gets donated to camp\, and the other half goes to the winners! \n$36 per box. Buy as many boxes as you like.\nPayout mechanics\, if all 100 boxes are complete: \n\n1st quarter winner: $225\n1st half winner: $450\n3rd quarter winner: $225\nEnd of game winner: $900\n\nHow It Works \nEach person purchases boxes on a 10 x 10 grid. \nOnce you sign up and pay (below)\, your name will be written on a box in the grid. \nOnce all boxes have been filled in\, the grid is labeled 0 through 9 in random order along the horizontal and vertical axis. These numbers correspond to score tallies for the two teams in the game. \nAt the end of each quarter of the game\, whichever box corresponds to the trailing digit of the scores for each team wins a portion of the pot in the pool. \n(For example\, at the end of the first quarter for the 2014 Super Bowl\, the Seattle Seahawks led the Denver Broncos 8-0. If you had an 8 for the Seahawks and a 0 for the Broncos\, you would have won the money for the 1st quarter.) \nPlease note that if the game goes into overtime\, the 4th quarter winner this year will receive $0 while the end of game winner will receive the full $900. We are enacting this change to avoid any confusion in case there is a second overtime. This is also how standard pools do it. \n\nTo view the 2020 Super Bowl Squares grid click here

SUMMARY:Friends & Family Hike Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a wonderful fall day of hiking\, foliage\, new and old friends back at Camp. We will be offering a wide range of hike options. \nThe fee for Family Hike Day is $25 per person or $100 per family.\nWe’ll be providing breakfast\, snacks\, and a guided hike.\nAll proceeds will benefit Surprise Lake Camp scholarships! \nSchedule\n9:00 – 9:45am: Check-in and bagel breakfast\n10:00am SHARP: Hikes begin \nHike Choices:\n\n\nSugarloaf/Breakneck: Difficulty Level is very challenging.  This is for very hardy hikers who have hiked Breakneck before (required) and feel they can handle even more.  *Please note we expect this hike to take 5.5 hours.  The path starts towards Bald Spot.  We don’t turn onto Jacob’s ladder\, instead we continue straight\, cross the Breakneck Ridge Trail\, and follow the dirt road down the hill in the direction of Pete Seeger’s house.  Then we will make a left onto the Yellow trail (Wilkinson Memorial Trail) The Yellow trail goes over Sugarloaf and ends by Breakneck.  We will then follow the White trail (Breakneck Ridge Trail) over its various peaks and return to SLC via the partially marked Blue trail over Hudson Overlook and Bald Spot. \nBull Hill/Mt. Taurus:  Difficulty Level is medium to challenging\, including some inclines.  It takes approximately 3-4 hours.  It’s not a rock scramble like Breakneck\, just a good old-fashioned climb with several fantastic views and points of interest along the way.  This is a beautiful spot\, and a choice place to view Crow’s Nest and Storm King Mountain on the other side of the river. \nBreakneck Overlook Loop:  This mid-level hike has the glory of climbing Breakneck Ridge (this is the 4th peak of Breakneck) without actually climbing up the rock face.  We will take a scenic\, fall-foliage-filled walk in the woods through Cornish\, climbing up the mountain towards this overlook\, loop around to Hudson Overlook\, and then come back down into camp.  Approximate time hiking is 3 hours.  You must be able to walk 20 minutes up an incline without getting short of breath in order to choose this hike.  \nCornish Discovery: Learn about our historic Northgate ruins led by local expert\, Thom Johnson. Thom will share images of the original Cornish estate and impart his knowledge about its fascinating history and connection to camp\, and also inform participants about recent developments and clean-up efforts in the area.  Difficulty level ranges from rustic\, unleveled roads to mild inclines. \n\n\nPlease Remember:\n\nChildren under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.\nConsent/Release form must be completed at or prior to registration.\nSorry\, NO PETS are allowed on hikes.\nA brown-bag lunch and snacks are strongly suggested.\nAll participants must bring an ample supply of water and canteens/water bottles.\nDress in layers. It can be quite chilly in the morning\, and will likely warm up\nthroughout the day.\nBring a camera for great photo opportunities!

SUMMARY:Visiting Day (for full-summer campers)
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to welcome the families of full summer campers to visit camp. \nThis summer Camp is inviting all of our guests and campers to enjoy a complementary (kosher) BBQ lunch. \nFor those coming up by train (please see form at the bottom of the page):\nWe offer families a shuttle from and to the Cold Spring Train Station. The train leaves Grand Central Station at 9:45am  and arrives in Cold Spring at 11:10am. The return train to Grand Central leaves at 5:17pm and arrives at 6:53pm. The afternoon shuttle back to the train station will leave camp at 4:40pm. \nWhat to bring:  \n\nMany families set up picnic areas – feel free to bring folding chairs and/or picnic blankets\, some families even bring tents!\nA bathing suit and towel.\nA water bottle.\n\nWhat NOT to bring:  \n\nVisiting Day is limited to family members only. Family members who are under 16 must stay in the company of a parent/guardian throughout the day.\nDon’t bring ANY pets.\nDon’t bring a barbecue!\nDon’t bring alcoholic beverages of any kind.\n\nRules & Reminders for the Day  \n\nCampers cannot be taken out of camp. We are sorry\, but there are no exceptions.\nVisiting Day produces a lot of extra traffic on Lake Surprise Road. Please drive extremely slowly! Be courteous and do not honk your horn around blind turns.\nIf you arrive before 12:00pm\, you will be asked to wait—this start time will be strictly observed.\nVisiting Day ends at 4:30pm\nWe discourage smoking at Camp. Visitors will only be permitted to smoke in camp’s two designated smoking areas: there is a smoking area behind the Mainside Canteen and behind the kitchen on Teenside. In a place where camper health and safety are paramount\, we’re sure you will support our effort to keep second hand smoke away from children.\nWe cannot  reschedule\, so the day is rain or shine.  Please dress appropriately.\nWe want to remind you that the terrain at Camp can be quite rugged. Please keep this in mind when thinking about what you wear on your feet.\nPlease remember that Mainside campers cannot keep food in their cabins. You may bring food on Visiting Day\, but unfinished food should not be left with your camper. If you are bringing food to Camp\, please do not bring food with peanuts or tree nuts to avoid issues with campers who have life threatening allergies.\nCamp maintains a strict no-tipping policy. Please do not place the counselors in an uncomfortable position. The best way to express appreciation for your camper’s counselor is to make a donation to the camp scholarship fund in their honor. This can be done in the main office\, or online. The staff member(s) you wish to recognize will receive a letter stating that a donation was made in their honor\, and they really appreciate this.\nLast\, the best goodbyes are the briefest. The best thing to do is to quickly check your child back in (no later than 4:30pm)\, give them  a quick hug and kiss\, and then leave the rest to the caring counselors who will be on hand to help the campers  return to our regular activities.  We have a bunch of fun  events planned for them for Trip Break!\n\nIf you are interested in reserving seats on our shuttle from and to the Cold Spring train station\, please sign up here:
