Visiting Day | Surprise Lake Camp

Visiting Day

We look forward to welcoming our families for Visiting Day!

Please arrive between 9:45 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. and plan to leave at 3:00 p.m. When you come to camp there will be some special activities planned. The Mainside campers are hard at work on a musical presentation that will take place at the Eddie Cantor Theater at 11:00 am.  Make sure to attend so they can show off for their most important audience – You!

For those coming up by train:
Take Metro North train from Grand Central Station at 7:43 am (arrives in Cold Spring at 9:05 am).  Please click here so we know to pick you up in the commuter parking lot at Cold Spring station.

What to bring:
- Bring sturdy shoes. We suggest that that NO SANDALS OR FLIP-FLOPS be worn when visiting camp.
- Bring a picnic lunch. Many families also bring folding chairs and/or picnic blankets, and some even bring tents!
- Hot dogs, hamburgers, and soda are available for sale, and the canteen will be open. Remember that we are a Kosher camp. If you prefer, your child(ren) can also eat in the dining room at 1:00 p.m. Sorry, we can’t feed guests in the dining room.
- Bring a bathing suit.

What NOT to bring:
- Visiting Day is limited to family members only. Family members who are under 16 must stay in the company of a parent/guardian throughout the day.
- Don’t bring ANY pets.
- Don’t bring a barbecue! The smoke irritates other visitors and the coals are a fire hazard.
- Don’t bring alcoholic beverages of any kind.

Rules & Reminders for the Day

  1. Children cannot be taken out of camp.  We are sorry, but there are no exceptions.
  2. Visiting Day produces a lot of extra traffic on Lake Surprise Road. Please drive extremely slowly! Be very courteous, and do not honk your horn around blind turns.
  3. If you arrive before 9:45 a.m., you will be asked to wait—this start time will be strictly observed.
  4. No arrivals after 1:00 p.m. and no departures before 2:00 p.m. This creates a dangerous situation on the road.
  5. Visiting Day ends at 3:00 p.m.
  6. Visitors will only be permitted to smoke in camp’s two designated smoking areas: the designated smoking area along the lower road on Mainside and in the designated smoking area behind the kitchen on Teenside. In a place where camper health and safety are paramount, we’re sure you will support our effort to keep second hand smoke away from children.
  7. We cannot reschedule, so the day is on rain or shine.  Please dress appropriately.
  8. Please remember that Mainside campers cannot keep food in their bunk. You may bring food on Visiting Day, but unfinished food should not be left with the campers.
  9. Camp maintains a strict no-tipping policy. Please do not place the counselors in an uncomfortable position. The best way to express appreciation of your child's counselor is to make a donation to the camp scholarship fund in their honor. This can be done in the main office, or online.  The staff member(s) you wish to recognize will receive a letter stating that this was done, and they really appreciate this.
  10. Last, the best goodbyes are the briefest. The best thing to do is to quickly check your child back in at the appropriate time (no later than 3pm), give them a quick hug and kiss, and then leave the rest to the caring counselors who will be on hand to help the campers readjust to camp.  We also have a fun event planned for them!
