A Helping Hand at Camp: SLC’s Camper Care Team

Monday, October 14, 2024

Summer camp is a time for fun, friendship, and adventure. But for some campers the transition to a new environment can be challenging. That’s where Surprise Lake Camp’s Camper Care Team comes in. This dedicated group of mental health professionals, school counselors, and caring adults plays a crucial role in ensuring that everyone at SLC has a positive and supportive experience.

Before Camp Begins

To ensure a positive and supportive camping experience for all children, each spring our Camper Care Team proactively reaches out to families who have noted concerns about their child’s social or emotional well-being on their camper forms. This information becomes the driving factor in developing a personalized success plan for summer, tailored to their child’s unique needs. These plans may include strategies for building social skills, managing anxiety, or addressing other challenges. By working collaboratively with parents, we aim to create a welcoming and inclusive environment in which every camper feels valued and supported.

Providing Support and Guidance During Camp

Someone from the Camper Care Team is always on-hand to listen, provide support, and offer guidance. They work closely with campers to identify and address any potential issues, such as:

  • Homesickness: Many campers experience homesickness, especially during the first week at camp. The Camper Care Team can help campers cope with these feelings and develop strategies for staying in the moment and adapting to camp life.
  • Social dynamics: Camp can be a great place to make new friends, but it can also be challenging to navigate social relationships – especially when living together. The Camper Care Team can help campers develop healthy social skills and resolve conflicts.
  • Personal challenges: Campers may face a variety of personal challenges. The Camper Care Team can provide support to help campers overcome their specific obstacle — developing coping mechanisms and fostering resilience.

A Resource for Counselors

The Camper Care Team also functions as a vital support system for staff members. They can seek guidance from our team on how to effectively address the challenges campers may face, such as homesickness, anxiety, or social difficulties. The team offers practical advice, intervention strategies, and resources to help counselors create a positive and supportive environment for all campers.

We also recognize the unique challenges that counselors face, especially those new to the country or away from home for the first time. To help counselors feel their best, our team is available to provide emotional support to them, as well. We believe that a well-supported staff is essential in creating a positive and welcoming camp experience.

Conclusion

SLC’s Camper Care Team is committed to ensuring that every camper and staff member has a safe, enjoyable, and meaningful camp experience. According to the ACA, this is a service that is lacking at many camps. By providing support, guidance, and resources, the team helps our summer community to thrive and develop important life skills.
