What is Surprise Lake Camp?
Surprise Lake Camp is a nonprofit Jewish overnight summer camp located in Cold Spring, New York. It provides a traditional sleepaway camp experience focused on community, outdoor adventure, friendship, and Jewish values.
Where is Surprise Lake Camp located?
Surprise Lake Camp is located in Cold Spring, NY in the Hudson Valley region of New York State. The camp sits on a large wooded property with access to a private lake and natural outdoor space. It is located within the Hudson Highlands and is accessible via Metro North from the Cold Spring, NY train station. It is a 15-minute car ride from the train station.
Does Surprise Lake Camp provide transportation to and from camp?
Surprise Lake Camp typically provides busing from Long Island, New Jersey and NYC for an additional nominal fee. The sign-up form will made available to enrolled families.
Drop-off/pick-up locations might be:
- Brooklyn (Park Slope)
- New Jersey (Manalapan)
- Long Island (Plainview)
Minimum registration will be required at each location.
What age groups attend Surprise Lake Camp?
The camp typically serves children entering elementary through high school (approximately ages 7–16 / grades K–10). Campers are grouped by grade to ensure appropriate programming and social development.
Is Surprise Lake Camp a Jewish camp?
Surprise Lake Camp is a Jewish overnight summer camp that integrates Jewish culture, traditions, and values into daily camp life, including Shabbat celebrations and kosher meals. The camp is non-denominational, meaning it is not affiliated with any specific branch of Judaism. Do campers need to be Jewish to attend?
No. While the camp is rooted in Jewish tradition, it is inclusive and welcomes campers and staff members from a variety of Jewish and culturally diverse backgrounds.
Does Surprise Lake Camp Offer a Bar or Bat Mitzvah Program?
Yes. Surprise Lake Camp offers a Bar and Bat Mitzvah program designed for campers without synagogue affiliation. The program blends Jewish learning, reflection, and community celebration in a supportive camp setting. Family and friends (10-15 people) are invited to attend the ceremony and Oneg, along with camp friends.

What is bunk life like at Surprise Lake Camp?
Campers at Surprise Lake Camp live in bunks (cabins) with a small group of peers and counselors. Bunk life is designed to build friendship, independence, responsibility, teamwork, and social development in a safe and supportive community environment.
Most bunks include attached bathroom facilities, while other bunks are located near modern shared washhouse facilities. The camp is also actively investing in ongoing facility upgrades to continue improving the camper living experience and overall comfort.
What should campers pack when they come to Surprise Lake Camp?
The most important things to pack for camp are energy, flexibility, and a readiness for adventure! Beyond that, your camper will need some stuff. Everything MUST be labeled with your camper’s name, even socks, even toiletries! Laundry service is
provided once a week. It is not recommended for delicate clothing. Camp is not responsible for lost or damaged clothing. Younger children tend to run out of clothing a little faster; so you may want to add to the below list.
Does Surprise lake Camp offer laundry service for campers and staff?
Yes, Surprise lake camp does offer free laundry service for campers and staff. A commercial laundry service takes each camper’s laundry once a week–included in tuition; no extra charge–and returns it washed and dried. The packing lists account for this frequency and turnaround time. This laundry service is not recommended for delicates, colors that have never been washed and may bleed, or very expensive items. But please keep those at home anyway. It’s camp! Get Your Feet Wet is so short that campers do not have laundry service.
How are Surprise Lake Camp campers grouped?
Surprise Lake Camp campers are placed into grade-based units and then into smaller cabin groups. This structure helps ensure age-appropriate programming and strong peer connections.
Can friends or siblings request to be together?
Yes. The camp allows friendship and sibling requests when possible, depending on grade, group placement and cabin availability.
How long are Surprise Lake Camp's sessions?
Surprise Lake Camp bases it session calendar off the New York City Board of Education calendar, so the dates and session lengths can vary from summer to summer.
Typically the camp offers multiple session lengths, including:
- Free Rookie Days, typically two (2) Sundays per summer
- Family Camp Weekend (typically held over Labor Day Weekend)
- Short 5-day introductory sessions called “Get Your Feet Wet” in August
- 20-day sessions
- 36-day sessions
- Full summer sessions
This allows families flexibility based on experience level and schedule.
What if my child has never been to sleepaway camp before?
First-time campers are always welcome at Surprise Lake Camp. The camp offers supportive onboarding, shorter session options, and a structured environment to help new campers adjust smoothly. Does Surprise Lake Camp allow technology?
No. The camp is a fully unplugged environment, meaning no phones, tablets, or screens. This encourages social connection, independence, and immersive experiences. Camper are allowed to being devices that are not internet connected, such as pre-loaded kindles for reading and mp3 players for listening to music.
What kind of food is served at Surprise Lake Camp?
Surprise Lake Camp meals are family-style and kosher, with accommodations available for allergies, dietary restrictions, vegetarian diets, and other needs. Meals are either dairy or meat-based.
A breakfast bar is available each morning with these typical options:

A salad bar is available at lunch and dinner with these typical options:

SLC also offers a pasta bar with tomato sauce at both lunch and dinner.
Is Surprise Lake Camp safe?
Yes. Surprise Lake Camp takes the safety of its community very seriously. It follows established youth camp safety standards, staff training protocols, and supervision ratios. It is accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). SLC’s entrance is gated and has manned security, cameras and a two-way radio system. We also have security camera feeds on the camp property.
How do parents communicate with campers?
Communication is intentionally limited to support independence. Families typically connect through mail, email and structured communication systems rather than phone calls or than real-time digital messaging. Phone calls can be arranged for birthdays or for other specific purposes. Parents can interact with camp staff as much as needed and SLC offers a parent visiting day for each session.
