Hike Choices

First Peak of Breakneck / New Nimham Trail: Led by Ranger Barry and Jordan Dale.

This hike is the most strenuous of the three being offered and is wonderfully rewarding.  The hike should take 4 – 5 hours with most of the difficulty climbing to the first peak of Breakneck Mountain.

The hike starts by walking through Cornish to the Brook Trail to 9D by Breakneck tunnel.  New signs explain the history of this section.

Question: Who owned the Cornish Estate before the Cornish family? Find the answer on this hike.

After the Breakneck tunnel, we head up the Breakneck Ridge Trail to the first peak. This is a challenging rock scramble. If you haven’t done this trail for a while, you will see changes to the start of the trail making the first 300 feet of the trail easier.

From the first peak, we head down in the direction of Sugarloaf Mountain on the new Needham Trail. This is a highly engineered trail that is fairly smooth. Picture walking down 50 flights of steps with short sections between flights.  We make a right turn  onto the Wilkinson Memorial Trail. The trail goes along the side of Sugarloaf Mountain and parallels the Breakneck Ridge Trail. At one point the trail turns to the northwest. We instead make a right turn onto a very old Jeep road. This road intersects shortly with the Breakneck Ridge trail. We make a left and continue to a right turn onto  the Ranger Barry Trail and then another right turn to the First Outpost Trail and back to camp.

Bull Hill/Mt. Taurus: Led by Jason Hoffman.

Difficulty level is moderate to challenging, including some inclines.  This is a good old-fashioned climb with several fantastic views and points of interest along the way.  This is a beautiful hike, and provides choice views of Crow’s Nest and Storm King Mountain on the other side of the Hudson River.

Cornish Discovery: Led by Jeff Berk.

Travel through Teenside and beyond to explore our historic Northgate ruins.  This hike is the least difficult of the four being offered, with terrain ranging from rustic, unleveled roads to mild inclines.  This is a great option for families with children.
