Friends & Family Hike Day Fall 2022

October 16, 2022 @ 9:45 am - 3:00 pm

Join us for a wonderful fall day of hiking through the fall foliage with new and old friends back at SLC.

Schedule

9:00 – 9:45am: Check-in for all hikes

10:00am SHARP: Hikes depart

Hike Choices

Fire Tower Plus: Led by Ranger Barry. This hike is the most strenuous of the four being offered and is wonderfully rewarding. Hikers will begin on the Mainside ballfield and immediately ascend uphill, traveling to the Beacon Fire Tower and back to camp via the Ranger Barry Trail and the Breakneck Ridge Trail. At times you will be scurrying on hands and knees almost straight up some rock faces.  Please consider this hike only if you are a seasoned hiker and able to hike at least 20 minutes uphill without getting out of breath.

Bull Hill/Mt. Taurus: Led by Mike Tenenhaus and Jeff Berk.  Difficulty level is moderate to challenging, including some inclines.  This is a good old-fashioned climb with several fantastic views and points of interest along the way.  This is a beautiful hike, and provides choice views of Crow’s Nest and Storm King Mountain on the other side of the Hudson River.

Hinterlands: Led by Jason Hoffman. A classic SLC overnight location, this hike begins with an immediate ascent and plateaus on a flat rock surface with views of the Hudson River.  This is a short but steep trail, with moderate difficulty.

Cornish Discovery: Led by Gayle Doyle. Travel through Teenside and beyond to explore our historic Northgate ruins.  This hike is the least difficult of the four being offered, with terrain ranging from rustic, unleveled roads to mild inclines.  This is a great option for families with children.

Please Remember

  • Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • A brown-bag lunch and snacks are strongly suggested.
  • All participants must bring an ample supply of water and canteens/water bottles.
  • Dress in layers. It can be quite chilly in the morning, and will likely warm up throughout the day.
  • Bring a camera for great photo opportunities!

For the safety of others, NO dogs will be allowed at camp.

The fee for Friends and Family Hike Day is $25 per person or $100 per family.  All proceeds will benefit the Surprise Lake Camp Scholarship Fund!
