Forge Your Leadership Path at Surprise Lake Camp: A Transformative Summer of Growth and Impact
Surprise Lake Camp’s Camper Leadership Program is a selective experience designed to cultivate the next generation of leaders. The program offers a unique opportunity to take on camp responsibilities while embodying SLC’s core values of compassion, community, grit, gratitude, and courage. Participants gain hands-on experience and develop essential leadership skills in a supportive and encouraging environment.
To be considered for the program, campers must have completed 10th grade by the summer, they must submit an application and participate in an interview process. The program carefully selects individuals who demonstrate a strong commitment to the camp community and exhibit the qualities necessary to thrive in a leadership role. Leadership always runs during Session One – and sometimes runs during Session Two, depending on the number of applicants. Campers who successfully complete the program can be considered for camp employment the following summer.
Leadership campers will have the opportunity to contribute to a wide range of roles based on their individual passions. From assisting at the waterfront to mentoring younger campers, or collaborating with camp specialists to lead activities, participants gain diverse experiences while developing essential leadership skills.
Leadership participants also play a vital role in supporting camp-wide initiatives. From assisting with large-scale events like the carnival and banquet to leading meaningful Shabbat services, these campers contribute significantly to the camp community.

The Leadership Program kicks off with an intense introductory week designed to forge strong bonds and develop essential leadership skills. Participants are thrown into a whirlwind of unconventional challenges, such as dressing identically, serenading unsuspecting staff members, and navigating a unique obstacle course by tying their shoes together. These out-of-the-box experiences not only build camaraderie but also cultivate teamwork, leadership, and the invaluable ability to maintain composure under pressure. In a short but intense period, campers make significant strides in their personal and leadership growth.
Kyla Ginsburg, the 2024 Leadership Supervisor, praises the enthusiasm and dedication of this year’s participants. “They return from their work periods beaming with joy, sharing heartwarming stories about their interactions with younger campers,” she says. Ginsburg also highlights the overwhelmingly positive feedback received from staff for the Leadership group’s performance.
