Heart and Home: The SLC Mezuzah Fundraiser

Friday, September 12, 2025

“This is My Home” isn’t just a saying at Surprise Lake Camp—it’s a feeling we carry in our hearts all year long. Our summer home calls to us, a place where shared laughter, learning, growth, and community have rooted us. All year, we feel the pull of reunion and the anticipation of returning to those familiar grounds.

A Jewish home is distinguished by a mezuzah on its doorpost. More than a decorative object, a mezuzah houses a powerful message, inscribed on a parchment scroll within. Its presence is a constant reminder that this is a sacred space upholding Jewish values.

This fall, SLC is thrilled to embark on a special project: adding mezuzot to our cabins and community spaces. We want to offer our campers this blessing in the place they call home during the summer. Just as we strive to create a warm and welcoming environment, we want our campers to feel a strong connection to their Jewish identity while living at SLC. These mezuzot will sanctify our summer home, inspiring us all to act with intention and respect as we come and go. Click here to learn more about Judaism’s 613 mitzvot.

Why a Mezuzah?

The mezuzah—a small case containing a kosher parchment scroll inscribed with sacred Torah verses—is far more than a decorative touch. It is a profound symbol of Jewish identity and faith. Each time we pass by, it serves as a gentle reminder of our covenant with G-d, bringing blessings and a sense of spiritual protection. By placing a mezuzah on a doorway, we transform ordinary entrances into sacred spaces, inviting mindfulness, intention, and the Divine presence into everyday life. At SLC, these mezuzot will welcome hundreds of campers, staff, and visitors each year, fostering a joyful connection to Jewish tradition in a vibrant, supportive environment.

Leave Your Mark on Camp

While sponsoring an entire building is a significant financial commitment, supporting a mezuzah offers a meaningful way to leave your mark at camp. Your name—or that of a loved one—can be connected to a meaningful space, creating a permanent presence at SLC. Picture your family’s name welcoming campers at the dining hall, where singing and shared meals create lifelong memories, or at the arts & crafts building, where creativity and self-expression flourish, or at the Eddie Cantor Theater, where we gather to celebrate Shabbat each week.

This project depends on the generosity of our community. Together, we will raise the funds to provide not only the mezuzot themselves but also the hand-calligraphed kosher parchment scrolls inside each one. Every gift will help bring this sacred tradition to life at camp and deepen the Jewish experience for all who call SLC their summer home.

Make your connection to SLC visible and lasting by sponsoring a mezuzah. Whether it’s the bunk where lifelong friendships were formed or another meaningful space, your contribution will help sanctify camp with blessing and intention. Together, we will strengthen our community—transforming each doorway into a source of blessing, connection, and Jewish pride. One doorway, one blessing, one mezuzah at a time—we’ll continue building the heart of our SLC community.
